A Brief History of the Guggenheim Foundation
Incorporated in 1937, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation was first called the Museum of Non-Objective Painting. Housed in a former automobile showroom, the Museum of Non-Objective Painting showcased a new and exciting form of radical art, which included works by Paul Flee, Piet Mondrian and Vasily Kandinsky. Unique and experimental, the Museum on Non-Objective Painting attracted the attention of architect Frank Lloyd Wright. Wright would later build a new home for the museum, creating a temple of spirit designed to shatter the existing notions of what a museum should look like. Opened in 1959, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum now stands at the corner of Fifth Avenue and 89th Street, providing visitors with an exciting look at architectural norms.
