Interesting Facts about the Mets
- The New York Mets baseball club truly is the peoples team just look at their name! Mets, which is a shortened form of the word Metropolitans, is used to represent the teams strong community ties, while at the same time enforcing the idea of a team built for the entire New York metropolitan area.
- The New York Mets logo was designed by famed sports cartoonist Ray Gatto and represents the return of National League baseball to the Big Apple. The background of the logo features five distinctive buildings commemorating the teams strong ties to Brooklyn and Midtown Manhattan. The building on the far left hand side is a church spire, symbolic of Brooklyn (known as the borough of churches). The second building from the left is also symbolic of a Brooklyn local, this time the Williamsburg Savings Bank, which is currently the boroughs tallest building. If you look closely you will see that the remaining imagines resemble that of the Woolworth Building, the Empire State Building and the United Nations Building.
- Only one home run has ever been into the upper level of bleachers at the Mets home field, inside Shea Stadium. This massive hit was executed on April 10th 1969 by the Mets own Tommie Agee. A sign currently marks the spot where the homer landed.
