Franchise Overview
Over the past nine years the New York Liberty have matured into a polished sports franchise, providing New Yorkers with a fresh take on an old favorite. When the WNBA first opened in 1997 the New York Liberty made a stunning first round draft pick out of then college superstar Rebecca Lobo, setting the foundations for a championship team right of the bat. Sadly Lobo suffered a string of serious injuries shortly after her starting game. These injuries would force her to retire from the league several season later, minus a much sought after championship ring. Despite this set back, the Liberty still managed to emerge as a heavy contender meeting up with Houston Comets in the WNBA finals both in 1997 and 1999. The Liberty returned to the finals in 2000 and 2002 losing to the Comets and the Los Angeles Sparks.Standout Players
Over the past few years the New York Liberty have gain a reputation for producing some of the worlds best womens basketball players, thanks to hard work and dedicated coaching. One of these players is none other than Teresa Weatherspoon who emerged as the Libertys star player after Lobo became injured. Weatherspoon continued to dominate the floor, averaging insane minutes on the court until the 2003 season. This year marked a transitioning phase for the Liberty as new recruits forged to the front of the pack. Fan Favorite Becky Hammon would eventually replace Weatherspoon as the teams starting point guard, leading the team to playoff appearances in 2004 and 2005. This year marked the emergence of another key player on the Liberty squad, center Ann Wauters. Although Wauters led the team to their eighth playoff appearance she failed to produce in the post-season, due to a season ending injury. The Libertys Mascot
