About the Legendary New Years Eve Ball
The original New Years Eve Ball, which consisted of iron, wood and nearly 100 25-watt light bulbs, was first suspended above the city on December 31st, 1907. Since its maiden voyage in 1907, the New Years Eve ball has made nearly 100 descents, with the exception of 1942 and 1943 when the celebration was suspended due to wartime dimout regulations. In 1955 the original ball was replaced by a new state-of-the-art aluminum ball which remained unchanged until the mid 1980s when red bulbs and a green stem converted the tradition ball into an apple for the I Love New York marketing campaign. The current New Years Eve ball was totally redesigned in 2000 by Waterford Crystal in tribute of the millennium celebration. Composed of a total of 504 tiny crystal triangles, 168 external clear Philips Halogena Brilliant Crystal Light Bulbs, 432 internal Philips Light Bulbs (208 clear, 56 red, 56 blue, 56 green and 56 yellow), and 96 high intensity strobe lights. Ninety rotating pyramid mirrors are also utilized on the geodesic sphere, allowing the ball to produce a state-of-the-art light show and kaleidoscope affect atop One Times Square. An impressive feat of designed and engineering, the Waterford Crystal ball weighs approximately 1,070 pounds and takes exactly one minute to descend the spire atop Times Square.
