The musical A Chorus Line is based on several taped sessions of Broadway dancers or "gypsies". Initially when A Chorus Line was first conceived it actually consisted of eight actors/ actresses of the Original Broadway cast. Directed and choreographed by Michael Bennet, with music by Marvin Hamlisch and lyrics by Edward Kleban. The book was assembled by James Kirkwood, Jr. and Nicholas Dante. A Chorus Line had a several successful tours even making a visit to the Pantages Theatre in Hollywood. In fact, it was gaining so much esteem that it won the Laurence Olivier Award as Best Musical of the Year in 1976.
